Why birds move in under solar panels
A solar array creates close to perfect nesting conditions. There is a gap of roughly 100 to 150 mm between the panels and the roof surface, it is shaded from the sun and sheltered from rain and wind, it sits warm from the panels above, and it is completely out of reach of cats and people. From a pigeon's point of view it is better than any tree in the garden.
In East London it is mostly feral pigeons and Indian mynas, with starlings on some properties. Mynas in particular are aggressive nesters and will return to the same site season after season once they have used it successfully.
The first sign for most homeowners is noise — scratching and cooing above the ceiling early in the morning. By that point the nest is usually well established, because birds are quiet while they are building and only become noticeable once chicks arrive.
What the damage actually looks like
This is not a cosmetic problem, and it is worth understanding what you are actually preventing.
- Chewed cabling. Nesting birds strip and pull at the DC cabling running between panels. Damaged insulation on a live DC circuit is a genuine fire risk, and it is the reason insurers take an interest.
- Blocked gutters. Nesting material washes off the roof and packs into the gutters and downpipes — which then overflow into the walls.
- Droppings on the panels and roof. Acidic, corrosive to the aluminium frames and mounting hardware, and they shade cells directly, which costs you output.
- Mites and parasites. Bird nests carry mites that migrate into the roof space and, eventually, into the house.
- Warranty and insurance complications. Damage caused by pests sits in an awkward place between a panel warranty and a household policy, and it is rarely a comfortable claim.
The cost of clearing a nest, repairing chewed cabling and cleaning the roof beneath it comfortably exceeds the cost of proofing the array in the first place.
How we proof an array — and the one detail that matters most
We fit a UV-stable mesh around the full perimeter of the array, closing the gap between the panel edge and the roof so nothing can get underneath.
The mesh clips on. We never drill into your panels or frames. This is the single most important detail on this page. Drilling into a solar panel frame — or into the mounting rails in the wrong place — will void your panel manufacturer's warranty, and plenty of operators do exactly that because it is faster. We use purpose-made stainless clips that grip the panel's C-channel, fitted at roughly 500 mm intervals. Nothing is screwed into the panel, the frame or the roof sheet.
The mesh is also removable. If your installer needs to lift a panel for a fault, a section unclips and clips back — you are not cutting anything off.
Before the mesh goes on, we clear whatever is already under there and clean the roof surface beneath. There is no point sealing a nest in.

Do it at the same time as a clean
The sensible way to buy this is bundled with a solar panel clean. We are on the roof once, the array gets cleaned properly while it is accessible, and the mesh goes on afterwards. That saves you a separate call-out and it means the panels are in known-good condition when they are proofed.

The other reason to bundle: once the array is proofed, routine cleaning is the only maintenance it needs. Bird proofing is a one-off purchase that removes an entire category of problem permanently.
The best time of year to do it
Winter, and there is a practical reason. June to August is East London's driest, calmest, sunniest stretch — about 25 mm of rain across five or six days a month — which makes it the most reliable window for roof work all year.
It is also ahead of the spring nesting season. Proofing an empty array in July is a straightforward job. Proofing an array with active nests and chicks in October is slower, messier, and there are welfare considerations that mean we may have to wait.

Will bird proofing damage or void my solar panel warranty?
Not the way we fit it. We use clip-on stainless fasteners that grip the panel's C-channel — nothing is drilled into the panel, the frame or the roof. Drilling is what voids warranties, and it is worth asking any other quote you get whether they drill.
Can the mesh be removed if my installer needs to service a panel?
Yes. It clips on and off in sections, so a panel can be lifted for a fault and the mesh clipped back afterwards. Nothing needs to be cut.
What if birds are already nesting under my panels?
We clear the existing nesting material and droppings, clean the roof surface underneath, and then fit the mesh. There is no sense sealing a nest in. If there are active chicks we will discuss timing with you rather than simply removing them.
Does the mesh look bad from the ground?
It sits tight against the panel edge in a dark finish and is very hard to see from ground level. Most people cannot tell a proofed array from an unproofed one without being told where to look.
