Why coastal glass hazes so quickly
If you have moved to East London from inland, the speed at which windows go dull here is usually a surprise. Salt spray carries a long way on an onshore wind, and it does not need a storm to do it — an ordinary breezy afternoon in Nahoon or Bonnie Doon puts a fine mist of salt on every seaward-facing pane in the house.
Salt is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture out of the air. Overnight it draws dew onto the glass, and by morning that dew has dried and left the salt behind, slightly thicker than before. Repeat that for a few weeks and you get the flat, milky haze that makes a clean house look tired even though nothing is actually dirty in the ordinary sense.
The other coastal problem is what the haze does to your frames. Salt sitting in the channel at the bottom of an aluminium window is mildly corrosive, and on older powder-coated frames it starts pitting the finish. Cleaning the frames and channels, not just the glass, is part of keeping the window itself in good condition.
What the water-fed pole system actually does
Traditional window cleaning uses detergent, a squeegee and a ladder. It works, but it has three problems: someone has to be up the ladder, the detergent leaves a residue that attracts dirt back onto the glass within days, and the tap water used for rinsing is full of dissolved minerals that dry as spots.
A water-fed pole system solves all three. We filter and deionise the water on site until every dissolved mineral is removed. That pure water is then fed up a lightweight carbon-fibre pole to a soft brush head, which agitates the dirt loose while the water flushes it away. The glass is then rinsed with the same pure water and simply left to dry.
Because there are no minerals in the water and no soap in the mix, there is nothing to leave a mark. The glass dries clear on its own. No cloth, no squeegee, no drips down the wall — and no one balancing a ladder on your paving or against your gutters.
The reach matters too. From the ground we can comfortably do up to three storeys, which covers essentially every home in East London including the double-storey properties in Beacon Bay and the stacked coastal houses at Winterstrand and Cove Rock.

How often, and what it costs
For seafront and near-seafront homes, every two to three months keeps the glass genuinely clear. A few streets back from the water, three to four months is usually right. Inland suburbs can comfortably go six months.
Pricing starts at R550 for the exterior glass on an average single-storey home. The things that move the price are the number of panes, how many storeys, whether there is glass balustrading, and access — a house with a steep bank on one side takes longer than one you can walk right around.

How often should windows be cleaned on the East London coast?
Seafront homes: every two to three months. A few streets back: three to four months. Inland suburbs: around every six months. Salt haze builds much faster than ordinary dust, which is why coastal glass needs more frequent attention than most people expect.
Do you clean the inside of the windows too?
We quote interior glass separately because it is a different job with different access requirements. Mention it when you ask for a quote and we will price exterior and interior together.
How high can you reach?
Up to three storeys from the ground with our water-fed pole. That covers virtually every residential property in East London, including double-storey homes in Beacon Bay and the coastal properties at Winterstrand and Cove Rock.
Why do the windows look wet when you leave?
Because they are — and that is normal. We rinse with deionised pure water containing no dissolved minerals, so it dries completely clear with no spots. There is nothing to wipe off. Give it an hour in the sun.
Do you use ladders?
Almost never. The water-fed pole means we work from the ground, so nothing leans against your gutters or walls and nobody is standing on your flowerbeds. It is safer for us and better for your house.
