Why gutters matter more on a holiday house
In a house you live in, an overflowing gutter gets noticed in the first storm. On a house that stands closed for months, water can spill over the same spot again and again, soaking into the wall, the window frame and the foundation below. The damp patch, the peeling paint or the ceiling stain turns up months later, when it costs far more to fix than a gutter clean would have.
Stilbaai gets rain in every season, with peaks in autumn and spring. So the gutters need to be clear going into the wetter months, not just before summer.
What ends up in gutters here
Leaves from the coastal bush and garden trees, wind-blown sand, bird nesting material and the odd tennis ball from the holidays. Sand is the one people don't expect. It doesn't wash through the downpipe; it settles in the gutter and turns into a heavy sludge, and a few centimetres of it is enough to hold water back and make the gutter overflow at the joints.
How we do it
- Gutters cleared by hand along their full length, with the debris bagged and taken away, not left on your lawn.
- Downpipes flushed and tested with water, so we know they actually drain.
- Blocked outlets and elbows cleared.
- Leaking joints, sagging brackets and rust pointed out to you.
When to have it done
Once before the wetter autumn and winter months, and again before the summer season if there are trees close to the house. If you only do it once a year, do it before winter. That's when an overflowing gutter on an empty house does the most damage.
Pricing
Gutter cleaning starts from R650 for an average single-storey home, and most homes come to R900 to R1,600. Double storeys, long gutter runs and heavy blockages add to the price. Gutters are included in our Arrival Ready and Close-Up packages.
