Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Stilbaai

An empty house is the quietest nesting site in town. Pigeons move in under the panels, and by the time you arrive, the nest, the droppings and the scratching in the ceiling at five in the morning are already there. We clear it out, clean underneath and fit clip-on mesh around the array. No drilling into your panels.

Why holiday homes are hit hardest

Birds choose nest sites where nothing disturbs them. A solar array already gives them a sheltered, shaded gap of 100 to 150 mm above the roof, out of reach of cats. On a house that stands empty for most of the year there is no one on the stoep, no car in the driveway and no noise, so the birds have the roof to themselves for months.

Most owners only find out when they arrive: droppings streaked down the panels and gutters, nesting twigs packed into a downpipe, and cooing above the ceiling at dawn. By then the site has been in use for a while, and birds come back to a site that has worked for them.

What it costs you if you leave it

  • Chewed cabling. Birds pull at the DC cabling between panels. Damaged insulation on a live DC circuit is a fire risk, and you want it found early.
  • Blocked gutters and damp walls. Nesting material washes into the gutters and downpipes, and the next heavy rain overflows into the walls. On an empty house, nobody sees it happen.
  • Droppings on the glass and frames. They shade cells directly, which costs output, and they are corrosive to aluminium frames and mounting hardware.
  • Mites in the roof space. Nests carry mites and parasites that work their way into the ceiling.

How we proof an array

First we clear out whatever is already under the panels, bag it and clean the roof surface underneath. There is no point sealing a nest in.

Then we fit UV-stable mesh around the full perimeter of the array, held by stainless clips that grip the panel's own frame channel. Nothing is drilled into the panels, the rails or the roof. Drilling into a panel frame can void the manufacturer's warranty, which is why we never do it. The mesh unclips in sections, so if your installer ever needs to lift a panel, nothing has to be cut off.

Do it together with a panel clean

Proofing and cleaning belong in the same visit. We are already on the roof with the water rig, the panels come out clean under the new mesh, and it costs less than two separate call-outs. With a full clean included, bird proofing starts from R3,950.

When to do it

Ideally before you come down for the season, so the gap is already closed when the house gets busy and the birds have moved on. If birds are nesting with eggs or chicks when we inspect, we'll tell you and agree the timing with you before anything is removed.

Areas we cover

We work across Stilbaai on both sides of the Goukou River, in Stilbaai West and Stilbaai East, as well as Jongensfontein and Melkhoutfontein. Further along the coast or inland? Ask us. We can often fit it in.

Solar Bird Proofing FAQs, Stilbaai

Will bird proofing void my solar panel warranty?

Not the way we fit it. The clips grip the panel's own frame channel, and nothing is drilled or screwed into the panels, the mounting rails or the roof. If you're unsure about your warranty terms, your installer can confirm.

Which birds does it keep out?

Mostly feral pigeons, which nest under panels all along the coast. The mesh also closes the gap to smaller birds such as sparrows and starlings.

Do I need to be there?

No. We need access to the property and the roof.

How much does bird proofing cost in Stilbaai?

From R3,500 for a typical 9–12 panel array, or from R3,950 with a full panel clean in the same visit. WhatsApp us a photo of the array and we'll confirm a fixed price.
